Natural gas has contaminants that leave deposits in the jets (orifices that meter gas flow) changing their size like cholesterol in a vein.

This improper air to fuel ratio causes some of the gas not to ignite increasing the amount needed to reach desired temperature. This lean condition raises operating temperatures of the furnace until safety circuits pause operation before damage can be done to the unit. This is referred to as a "short cycle".
