Report
Remodeling is a stressful and sometimes confusing endeavor for homeowners. Industry author David Lupberger has even generated a graph illustrating the highs and lows of the experience called The Homeowner's Emotional Roller Coaster. Landis recognizes a successful project is not just about great design and quality construction; it's about client experience too.
Design
Report
Company principal Chris Landis, AIA, and Director of Architecture, Paul Gaiser, AIA, are both experienced architects that manage a talented team of designers and drafters. The team uses the latest in 3D and virtual reality technology to help clients visualize the changes to their home. During the three design phases, they'll use a variety of practices to communicate design options.

As one of the Washington area's leading Design/Build firms, Landis Architect/Builders is and has been very concerned about the sustainability of our best practices. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the residential sector accounts for 22% of the total energy consumed in the U.S.
Feasibility Study
Report
The Feasibility Study is another great tool that the architect uses. It's great for design and also offers substantial value for a customer in the right situation. A Feasibility Study is similar to a Master Plan in that it involves less design work than the full design process.
Master Plan
Report
The Master Plan is a great architectural tool. It's great for design and also offers substantial value for a customer in the right situation. A Master Plan is used in residential architecture typically for larger projects that involve two or more potential construction phases done over a number of years.

Ethan Landis, principal at Landis Construction, talks about the current state of energy consumption in U.S. homes and then about two projects Landis has completed. One was a deep energy retrofit of a 100+ year old home in Georgetown and the other is a highly energy efficient home that we designed and built.
These are the top remodeling projects completed by our company in 2014. They include an addition on a Chevy Chase home, a condominium in the Watergate, a cherry kitchen, a modern Silver Spring kitchen, a classic and inspired master bath, and a green whole-house renovation with geothermal and solar panels.

We've done two big projects with Landis and have been highly satisfied both times. On time, professional, within budget, engaged ownership. Engaged owner who took responsibility for resolving issues; fantastic lead carpenter; willingness to work with us as we made changes in project along the way.

This is the second time we used Landis for the house remodeling. The first one was kitchen back in 2015. This time around, it was a bigger project, adding a new room on the third floor of our town house. We could not be happier for everything they have done. The house remodeling is stressful. Not everything goes perfectly. In that sense, one gets frustrated, but that's the nature of the house remodeling.

They are first and foremost very professional. They try to keep the schedule and budget. They think for us, instead of just getting a job done quick. Stated differently, we trust them, which probably the most important element of picking a general contractor.

Probably like most people, I really only write reviews if I have a really good experience - or a really bad one. This is the former. TLDR: construction project to gut and renovate a kitchen, living room and two bathrooms in a DC row house. Great experience, totally professional company, smoothest construction project I've ever been involved in.

The details: This is a high-quality top tier company. At no point did we encounter even a hint of unprofessionalism. Everyone we interacted with was highly skilled and a pleasure to work with. Even our neighbors commented on how great the workmen were. The design process was particularly good (Tahani Share and Matt Dirksen). The design team spent significant effort in trying to understand our vision for the job and the types of design we liked and was focused on translating that vision into the job - and they had an organized and efficient process for doing so.

When issues came up, they responded effectively and with integrity to find a resolution that we were happy with. The completed job is in fact what we envisioned and, with one exception around a tile selection (that's too complicated to discuss here) there are no significant areas where the design or construction turned out to be flawed or have problems.

We did find Landis to be more expensive than other options. We were willing to pay a premium to achieve a smoother construction process and avoid some of the risks and hassles that are so common in the construction industry. And we got most of that - with a few minor bumps along the way. But given the size of the project, perhaps those were inevitable. I've done projects on the cheap, and with solo or small contractors. This was a fundamentally different and better experience.

Overall, we have been very happy with the work completed by Landis Architects/Builders. We brought them a very large project and have been very impressed with how timely the work was completed! When they gave us a timeline for when we might expect the work to be finished, they really meant it! Not to mention, everything turned out absolutely beautifully! Plus, the process, although quite cumbersome and very time intensive, was actually relatively fun and made enjoyable and easy to manage by the staff assigned to assist throughout the process. We will certainly be using Landis again and already have begun future project plans to do so :

We did a major design/build project with Landis on a historic home where we gutted and updated the existing interior and then added a large addition. They were simply amazing to work with. Super organized, trustworthy, on-time, high quality and the finished product is perfection. Many of our neighbors complimented us on such a courteous and efficient team during the renovation process -- when do you hear of that?

There were often up to 20 tradespeople working at the same time to get a long job done in exactly the time they said it would. Highly recommend Landis for large and complex projects.

I first hired Landis in 2012 to restore significant damages done to my house. What they were able to do with my home completely surpassed my expectations. Joe Caw has been the project manager for each time that I have hired Landis and him as well as Ethan were always professional, respectful, and quality focused. I also hired Landis to do work on my basement and some exterior projects, and with both of them I got an incredible amount of value. I was particularly pleased with the all new bathroom they installed.

We have hired Landis for various projects since 2006. From our backyard patio over garage and stone wall to our front steps and our rear room addition, they have done an extensive amount of work in our house. Carlos Marin was very skillful and professional with his carpentry work, and Ethan Landis made sure the process was smooth. They listen, are easy to talk to, responsive, interested in our home, and are proud of the quality of their work.

They also have great coffee mugs! They are sensitive to the architecture of the house as well, and they know how to apply research knowledge and experience to achieve the right look.

I have hired Landis several times over the years for different renovations, and each time we have been so happy with the outcome. From the first job to the most recent, Landis has maintained an excellent standard of quality and professionalism. We continue to appreciate our remodeled kitchen and bathroom as well as basement and garage (and our daughter's room!) each day, and I would always recommend them for any residential remodeling or additions.

We hired Landis to create an addition on the back of our home expanding our kitchen and living area. We also tore out our old master bathroom and put in an all new layout with new fixtures and lighting. We wanted more natural light in our home and Landis was able to provide just that with well placed skylights and windows. Tahani Share did great work with the design plans, and Jon Bein and Luis Orellana were regularly on site and kept us updated with the process every step of the way.

Everyone we worked with was very conscientious and skilled, and pleasant to have in our home. This was very important to us considering our renovation took about 6-8 months. All in all, we highly recommend Landis. It is not the cheapest service, but you get what you pay you for, and they hit their deadlines with quality work.

I have been working with Landis for about 10 years, doin many types of construction from concrete footing to roof reworking and everything in between. The quality of work that I do for Landis is top notch. You always know that when you are working with them you get professionalism and an amazing finished product. Jon Bein, Allen Apple, and Andrew Kerr are all excellent project managers and I am proud of all the work I have done with them. I am grateful for all the opportunity and work I have had with Landis, and proud to be part of the family.

We hired Landis to do a full renovation of our house. They were able to provide with a wonderful finished product in just 6 months, everything from our driveway to our attic was renovated on some level. We added a new kitchen and master bedroom and the whole thing is beautiful - the kitchen of my dreams! Landis is professional and easy to work with - always responsive and willing to talk through an issue or a change during the work. Neighbors also appreciated the attention to community. Carlos Rodriguez was here everyday and paid attention to everything, as well as tidying up every night - he even went around with flyers to all the neighbors before work started to let them know who they could contact if they had an issue. Landis also stands by their work - our retaining walls started to lean after three years and they came back and re-did them after determining the cause of the problem. I would highly recommend Landis for any your reconstruction needs.

Landis has done two projects for us: expanding the house, with new kitchen and master bedroom, and later converting two porches into living spaces. Both times, we have been impressed by the quality of design and execution. The crews are really skilled, and good problem solvers when faced with structural issues. Schedules are met. Oversight is consistent and helpful. We are very happy with the results. Andrew Kerr, the project manager, and Ken Guillett are both very professional and skilled, and were a pleasure to have in our home.

Paul Gaiser (Architect) provided a wonderful, functional design and saw it through to completion. He also made adjustments as concealed conditions were encountered without compromising the design. The space he created became a very special place for out family.

Landis Construction walked off our +$400k remodeling project in early 2015. They broke their contract with us by notifying us that they were not going to honor the 2 year warranty. Then, in May 2015, we discovered a water leak inside the house from HVAC drainage that was never hooked up. They first agreed to fix it, then didn't show up. Then they said they wouldn't make any repairs.

Quality of their work? The project failed code inspections for structural, electrical, and plumbing (inspection occurred, then Landis notified 8/25/15). During construction, they damaged a pre-existing custom sliding set of doors. Agreed initially to 'make it right, ' in the end they walked away from that too. As of December 22, 2015, Landis has not made any repairs - even those required by code. Update: After seeing the response from Chris Landis, I had to respond.

The repairs recently made to address the code failures of the Landis work was done at our expense. Landis did not provide any support -- neither did their subcontractors. And, to that point, several code failures were due to the work of Landis employees, not "subs". There is still one remaining code failure on this +$400k project. Any code failures at all is embarrassing for a firm that charges so much and claims to deliver quality. Think about it--- "code" is the worst/lowest quality you are allowed to build --- and they couldn't meet it!

Landis Construction built a ensuite bathroom from a walk-in closet, and reconfigured the same room with a wall of closets that look like they were built with the house 122 years ago. They also did other work in other rooms.

The team at Landis simply does nothing but amazing work in the DC area. Their projects range from kitchen, bath, attic, basement remodeling. you name it. They do top of the line work (just check out some of their samples in their portfolio).

My husband and I downsized from a larger house in NW to a little townhouse in the Eckington neighborhood of DC, purchasing a recently renovated old townhouse with a basement apartment. We contracted with Landis to add a master bath in place of a small internal bedroom. The design process was wonderful and our designer really "got" what I was looking for and came up with a wonderful design, including maximizing storage (which was sorely lacking). Alas, when we began the work we discovered that most of the work done to make the house look cosmetically pleasing to a buyer was poorly and dangerously done; and every time my Landis crew opened a wall we found serious electrical, plumbing and structural problems.

What was supposed to be a relatively modest project (adding a bathroom) turned into a full on re do of the plumbing, electricity, the apartment bathroom and floor. The Landis team leader and crew were the consummate professionals, with creative, sound suggestions to fix serious pre-existing problems. The tradesmen on the Landis team are fantastic, the sub contractors they use are meticulous and up to a very high standard.

It was a pleasure to have the team in my home every day and they were extremely communicative, innovative and understanding of the tremendous stress the project put on my family. They are perfectionists about getting everything right - and my new bathroom is really wonderful. We are planning several other projects (once the bank account has recovered from the unexpected additional expenses needed to bring our home up to code and safety standards) - and I can't wait to see what they will do on our next projects - as in my mind, I wouldn't even consider anyone else after this very good experience.

Had Landis do a concrete pad for handicapped access and they did an excellent job at a completely fair price. Having concrete there instead of the brick inlaid as it had been, will permit greater walking safety for me, and also a mobility electric scooter to be parked easily, so this is an excellent home improvement. Think of Landis for the small jobs around your home.

The subs they use are excellent, the email contact with the general foreman is timely, the finished price was accurate, no surprises. Price is not the determining factor with me. No Hassle is King, and Landis provides that. Landis provided the footers, hand-dug the area to give me 8 more head room to the semi-enclosed area, they did all the preliminary that I doubt would be done in the same way as somebody who works out of the back of his truck might have done.

This work had concrete reinforcing grids, vapor barrier installation, and a clean and smooth finish. Totally happy with the results. Landis is excellence, consider them for small jobs as well as total rehab and construction.

Would not use this company, they do not stand behind there work. The are not a true construction company and are unable to anything but cosmetic work. My home is 20 years old and they could not solve the issues at hand. If you hire them, be prepared to have to have another true construction company or contractor come behind them to correct the work. Even the basic drywall and painting is substandard. Check "Consumer Checkbook" for other ratings. Ethan is an unethical businessman.

2012 This is one great company. They did a huge addition onto our house. I felt like the people from the Ritz Carelton were at work- very customer service oriented; professional; kind; quick to respond; excellent communication skills; exc ellent materials and workmanship; pricing at market rate. To top it off they came back 2 years later and fixed a problem at no cost! Howard Sachs M.D. Chevy Chase Maryland
