Since men and women emerged from caves and decided to build or form structures, a roof has been an indispensable, some would even say paramount, portion of almost anything standing. Basic Civil Engineering (Gopi, S. [2009]. Basic Civil Engineering [1st ed.]. Pearson Education.) teaches that a good roof is as essential to a building as a safe foundation, in that each affords security against destruction and deterioration.

In addition, the roof protects everything contained inside, whether it be finished interior space or furnishings. Most of us know enough about roofing to avoid using materials like thatch or sod to protect our home (that is, unless you're building in a historically preserved place like Cowtown!), but we might not know what to use.

Gutters also have a functional and aesthetic purpose. (Notice a trend here?) Aesthetically, they provide a transition from the roof to the side of a home. Typically, they match either the trim or siding color, although blending with the roofing color or using copper in order to make the guttering stand out are also options.

Let's first discuss the general purposes of siding to help those of us who don't know as much as we wish. Like roofing, the main purpose of siding is to protect, i.e. we want to keep the elements outside and our nice, cozy environment inside, while a secondary purpose is aesthetics.
