Refinishing
Report
Refinishing hardwood floors used to be a monster mess. Clouds of toxic dust were spewed everywhere. You had to cover or remove plants, artwork and furniture. It took days to resurface any size hardwood floor. Clean up was a nightmare. But not anymore. Now restoring hardwood floors is cleaner, faster and healthier thanks to our Vortex dustless floor sanding system.

We would not recommend their service to any of our friends or family. We got our carpet installed on August 20, 2021. Their installer (1) did not glue the padding to concrete floor, even though we paid for such service, and (2) broke a transition piece, left a 1.5 inch gap in the floor. As of today (Jan 12, 2022), California carpet still has NOT fixed the two issues: (1) gluing my carpet padding to the concrete floor.
The carpet SHIFTS when we walk on it and it SHIFTS when vacuum the carpeted area; (2) the transition piece between the carpet and hardwood floor that their installer broke, which left a 1.5" wide gap on my floor as shown in the attached photo. We ordered carpet and padding from this store in July and got the carpet installed on August 20th. The sales person described to us: the padding will need to be glued to our concrete floor (after studying the diagram of bedrooms and closets that their measurements person provided), and the installation persons were licensed to do the job.
They charged us half of the total cost upfront. Upon chatting with the installation persons, none of them was licensed. If they did a good job, we would not mind that they were not licensed. On August 20th, during installation, the installation lead refused to do the closets and told us not enough padding and we had to call the store and go to the store to buy more.
So I dialed the store. The lead saw I was actually calling the store, he immediately told me to hang up, may be he could find some scrap to fill the closet space. He did find 5 times the padding the closet space needed. After the installation persons left. I called Mark to report that the padding was not glued to the concrete floor as described to us (even though we were invoiced for such work preparation), and the installation person broke a transition piece between hardwood floor and carpet area and left 1.5" gap there.
He explained: glued does not mean glue over the whole surface, it can be zigzag glued to hold the padding down to prevent shifting and bubbling. I told him it's not zigzag glued either. At this point he got really mad over the phone and told me the padding I purchased was heavy, and it did not need to be glued to concrete floor; and the installation job was 1st class!
I saw that over the phone I could not get my message through, so I went to the store the following day to show them the broken transition piece and a photo of my floor with the gap. I sent the photo to the store. We sent them a follow up email on August 23rd asking them please fix those issues before charging the remaining amount. We did not hear from them, and they went ahead charged us the remaining. Few days later, still, not a word from the carpet place.

Seriously! Please do not use this company! Awful customer service, the worst I have ever had! Awful product. I have nails sticking out on all the ends of the carpet. My small children and disabled mom walk across this all the time. I had to buy a runner to cover it because they refuse to fix their mistakes or replace the defective carpet. I have been fighting for months over this all to just get ignored. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

I am Interior Designer, and I buy all of my hardwood flooring from California Carpet. The customer service there is unparalleled. They've bent over backwards to get products for me at the best deals that anyone can offer. For the residential end, I work with David, Geoff, or Greg, who are knowledgable and make themselves available to provide info (even on off days.) For commercial flooring, I work with Felix or Rose, who again are an incredible resource of knowledge on brands of commercial carpet, LVT and hard floorings. Always my first stop with clients!

I recently had a large carpet order and installation from California Carpet for my house. Much of the installation and carpet went well however in one room where the carpet is very important and visible there is a peaked, risen-up seam going across the middle of the whole room that is almost high enough to trip over. I called several times to get them to try to fix it or at least look at it and give me their assessment and they have not returned my calls or emails.
I was very disappointed that the business did not respond to me when I identified this error in the way they installed my carpet. I will not be shopping there again, it was a very disappointing experience. If California carpets calls or messages me back to resolve the problem with their work installing my carpet I will update this review.

PSA. Do not use California Carpet! All the negative reviews are true. They told my partner and I that the work would take 3 days and now it's been more than a month and will not be completed for another 2 months b/c, Jack Cantonese, refused to order enough wood for the job. When I went to inspect the work with my partner, Jack was extremely condescending and rude.
Not only was he 30 mins late to the mtg to discuss the delays, he couldn't find the Condo building that spans the entire block on Sutter. He also demanded a parking spot. This is San Francisco. Contractors find their own parking. Once inside the home, Jack disrespected my partner and I and tried to force us to take damaged wood that was already installed.
The installers were also completely unprofessional and caused many issues with our HOA. Using the resident luggage cart to move their work supplies and scratched up the newly installed floor (the small portion they completed) with the luggage cart. Jack Cantonese repeatedly told us while pointing at his clip board that all of these delays were in our contract and we had no other choice but to wait.
Now we cannot move into our home and mortgage still needs to be paid along with rent. DO NOT EVER USE THEM. They were also the most expensive quote. They tell customers of their superior quality and work but that is all lies. Save yourself the trouble. Jack, stop talking to customers.

Read all the one star ratings below, they're all true. I've had the worst experience with this company for a carpet installation of my entire house. I went through Costco, but unfortunately they subcontract the job to Cal. Carpets. It all started with the day the installers were scheduled to start the job. I took 2 days off based on what they told me. 30 minutes after the arrival window period, I get a call that they can't make it that day! So, I took the day off for nothing.
On the second day around the time they said it would be completed, they tell me they don't have enough carpet to complete the job! That was over 1 month ago and I'm still waiting for them to come back! DO NOT use California Carpets!

Cal floor poor customer service, a Costco vendor, they up sold to a carpet and padding that does not even fit under the doors and scheduled 2 different installers at same time. Now we have this thick carpet and the bedroom and closet doors barely move. No advance warning this would be an issue by the Costco sales manager. Really disappointing after spending many thousands!

Violetta the sales person & Oscar the installer were both great; Violetta keeping me abreast of the status of my order & even finding an alternative product when the one I ordered just wasn't coming thru. Oscar stayed until 8 at night to make sure the install was completed in 1 day as promised. The estimator & scheduling depts leave much to be desired in following requests & customer relations.

I just reviewed the reviews here to understand why Cal Carpets in San Carlos gets the 3+stars it gets after my experience recently. The sales person I worked with on this job is MARK and all of my comments here apply directly to what this man tried to get away with, which believe just may be illegal. I have a good friend that I am helping to replace her wall-to-wall carpet with engineered HW flooring.
I will say that when I explained to Mark my/our process in making selections, he left me alone and let us do our thing. Rather than rant and rave with the details, I will just list the most important things that happened: They were having a supposed 'President's Day' sale and of course we jumped through hoops to take home samples of interest to make sure we got the 20% discount on both the wood flooring and any area rugs we might want to purchase to go on it.
When we were checking our samples out, I asked Mark about the prices he was giving us per square foot to make sure they included the 20% discount. His reply, looking me right in the face, was "I am giving you 'Designer's Discount' pricing which is BETTER" - My immediate reaction was "this is BS", but to make sure, I asked our railing guy about this who works with top Bay Area designers all the time and he said he never heard of such a thing!
This really set me off, so I went home and went on-line to see how prices would compare with the exact same 4 products we chose. BINGO, all were less and some were as much as HALF of what Mark quoted IN WRITING! Going the extra mile (which I am known for), I then called other showrooms in San Jose to get quotes and learned the same thing! Mark also quoted their installation fee (BASIC without all the add-ons) at $4.50 per sq.
This caused me to use YELP to see if I could find our own installer and I found someone that gets 5 stars consistently and contacted him - His basic fee for engineered nailed HW flooring is $3.99 and after reading some of the reviews here about installation NIGHTMARES, I am fortunate and glad I checked this all out! I know there are some glowing reviews for this place and I myself have made all my carpet purchases here, but I have learned a hard lesson and will never go back there! What I experienced is UNACCEPTABLE and I believe not even legal. BUYER BEWARE!

I just moved from Castro Valley to San Carlos and needed carpet for three bedrooms, I went to a few local carpet dealers and California carpet had the best deal. Jerry helped us chose a pretty wool carpet for my new place! The installers were super nice and did a great job. Thank you California carpets!

I've been putting off going to the carpet store for some time now. Finally when I got around to it, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy California Carpet made the entire experience. Nora helped me choose the right carpet by giving me samples to take home, the estimator came out to take the measurements and in a few days.the installer arrived to install the carpet on the staircase. He did a beautiful job and the staircase looks really classy now.

Violetta was a pleasure to work with. She gave me a great price on a remnant for my office. She followed up with a phone call to make sure all went well with the instal before she charged the second half of my bill. I have used California carpets in the past for many years, but Violetta was by far, the best person to deal with. Thank you! I love my carpet!

We purchased a whole house of wall to wall carpet here 10 years ago. Several years ago the carpet developed wrinkles. The customer service person was very condescending, told me I must have been dragging furniture across it (no), and charged $400 to stretch out three wrinkles. Now it is wrinkling again. I'd assume improper installation - we have babies this carpet. I will not purchase another carpet here.

Cal. Carpet just installed new carpet/pad in our master bedroom and walk-in closet. Their scope also included moving furniture along with removing existing carpet and pad. The salesman worked great with my wife, the communication was excellent, and the installation manager was equally as great to work with. The crew arrived on time and did an outstanding job with the installation and clean-up was impeccable. I'm a hospital construction inspector (13 years) and previously a builder of large commercial construction projects, as such, I have a keen eye for detail. I highly recommend California Carpet.

We found California Carpet through a promotion they had with Costco. They gave us a bid that was a good value, but moreover the sales rep, Jerry, paid attention to what it was we wanted and offered helpful guidance. The installer, whose name escapes me, was obviously extremely experienced and really seemed to have passion for a quality job - not the easiest thing to care so much after many years at a job. 18 months later I can safely say it was a job well done.
While we were shopping the job, we experienced more than one operation that quoted insane prices with a "take it or leave it" attitude. Not so with these Cal Carpet. They worked hard for the business Would definitely use again.

I had used this business over the years for carpet. When I recently went in for vinyl plank flooring there was one sales person for the entire enormous showroom. She was nice but when I left my phone number for their measurement person to contact me, nothing happened. I stopped in in person to inquire after a few weeks and again nothing happened. Eventually a very grumpy guy came out and measured my house. Wouldn't you think that he would return that information to the store and then they would contact me. Didn't happen. I stopped in the showroom again and they had no measurements. It's the definition of very poor service

My blood boils whenever I reflect on my experience with California Carpet. The installation of hardwood flooring to replace the carpet was a total nightmare! I sensed that the sales representative, installer and office staff all appeared to dislike their jobs tremendously; and gladly took it out on the customers! The sales representative forgot to order materials, installers did not show up as scheduled and then showed up late when they finally showed up!
The first installation had to be removed and reinstalled. The installation lasted a few months more than necessary for a straightforward hardwood floor installation. The customer service was totally lacking and the installation was poorly executed. A DIY installation by a novice would have yielded better results! I am in disbelief that there are reviews that contain positive comments. I cringe whenever I drive past California Carpet on Industrial Road in San Carlos. California Carpet was a bad experience from start to finish.

Very lazy staff, Im a contractor and I needed to get carpet that they have in stock, the whole roll of carpet was there, the lady at the counter was so pissed that I needed it for now, and told me that the warehouse person is busy unloading a truck outside, /which truck left 5 min ago/, and to comeback tomorrow, I was the only customer at that time, if you can't sell carpet that is in stock, and making it so complicated, I can only imagineif you have to special order anything from them! It's been a while since I've experienced such a neglected service
