I am one of the homeowners, and I recommend this company without reservation. We started and finished our project during a difficult time (COVID) and they did excellent work. Were they perfect? No, but I don't think anyone can be. Were they excellent? Yes! Would I hire them again? Absolutely, and I expect we will. We did a big project, for us, not necessarily for them.
It was a full kitchen remodel with load bearing walls removal, chimney removal, mud room/laundry room addition, and garage expansion. Our photos are in the photos here. What was the best? Working with the people involved. Matt, Andrew, Kali, David, Deanne and the whole AMEK team. What were the challenges? COVID induced material and equipment issues and some communication hick-ups.
Of the hick-ups, not all were caused by AMEK, but some could have been handled better. I want to give an honest description here and not just all the glowing comments people usually write. So, for the criticism, it was in communication mostly and my wife and I take some of that responsibility. Overall, the positive experiences with AMEK far outweigh these negative experiences.
As I said at the beginning of this review, I recommend AMEK without reservation and we will likely hire them again for our next largish home project. We are extremely happy with our final project, and we learned a little about how we can make the next experience even better. My advice for people considering a home remodel includes doing your homework with getting multiple bids and vetting your contractor carefully prior to hiring them. We did this and I am so very happy that we did.

Can't say enough great things about the remodeling experience with AMEK. Great vision and execution. They remodeled our basement and turned an unused/avoided portion of our home into an oasis. They're understanding of our needs and design sense was on point from our first interaction with Matt (co-owner) to the final punchlist with Asher was exceptional. Great value. Their carpenters and subs were all pros. They'll be our first call when we remodel the exterior and main floor.

We did an extensive (3 month) interior home remodel of our 1950's rambler. They were able to redo the entire floor plan and maximize our space. It has been transformed into an open, welcoming, entertaining-friendly and livable space. They help you through the process, without rush or pressure. They treat you like family and have the best designers in the Twin Cities.
Their production team ensures that everything is taken care of, and on time. Their post-completion follow up to ensure your satisfaction is very evident. We wouldn't have done a remodel without AMEK. We were happy that they had the experience to make our dream a reality. Good people and very kind. Top of their game for sure.

AMEK team is just wonderful to work with. AMEK designed and built our sun room. The moment we met Matt at the re-modelers showcase we felt AMEK would be the one. Sara and Lacey came up with ingenious designs to meet our needs and paid attention to details. Usually any new construction is stressful, but John made this process smooth and stress free.
He informed us of the weekly schedule and plan. We were so comfortable with them in our house that we even went on vacation for two weeks during the construction. Great team, wonderful people and above all professional.

Highly recommend AMEK. Their whole team is friendly and thorough. They took care to listen to our design wishes and tastes. Matt, Sarah, Lacey, Brad and the team were great to work with. All did a great job taking us through the process. Their timelines were spot on. The carpenters were friendly, did quality work and took care of the job site well. We love our new kitchen and bathroom!

We had a very positive experience with AMEK. We actually did two projects - we remodeled our basement in 2016 and were so happy we remodeled our main floor in 2018-2019. We felt the design team did a really great job of listening to us and allowed us multiple sessions to pound out the best floor plan design. We also had access to Mingle's designer Trish Davis, who is fabulous.
All our cabinetry was custom built, the dimensions of our rooms were redesigned to maximize space and work flow, and the subs were great. Everyone contributed really great ideas and we have a very unique space that mirrors who we are. Overall, great job!

The Amek team is simply wonderful to work with. We completed two projects with them in the last 3 years and had a great experience with the entire team. For both our new siding and our main floor remodel, they showed great expertise and gave us so many ideas we did not think of to make our space more functional and attractive in design. Their communication throughout the entire process was really good and they were always available to answer questions and respond quickly to items that came up throughout the process.
We especially liked the fact that they were very open to working within our set budget, coming up with different solution we can make work in a certain price point. All around we had a wonderful experience and look forward to our next project with Matt and his team!

My wife and I met Paul Schmidt, one of the owners of this company, which operates under various names, at a Home and Garden Show in Eden Prairie, in the Spring of 2017. He gave a talk about how critical it is for exterior work on houses (siding and windows) to be done by contractors who understand how to properly install exterior siding and windows, and who install these systems professionally.
We were sold on his strategy and hired his company (AMEK) to install windows and siding on our house in Bloomington, MN. Work got started around April or May 2017. AMEK sent a couple of carpenters over to remove the siding and replace the windows. We had to leave town for a while due to a family crisis in my family. The carpenters installed the windows (expensive Marvin fiberglass windows) while we were out of town.
We came back to discover that they had dropped at least three of the windows while installing them, and never mentioned it to us. We now have three large dents in oak flooring that was installed just prior to the start of the siding project. This was only the beginning of the problems we were about to have with this contractor. The nearly $100,000 we paid for the work was not enough to interest them in managing our job properly.
They hired a fly by night subcontractor to install the siding (Hardie). This siding must be installed by qualified and trained personnel. The contractor they sent over had never installed cement board siding before. In fact, they had never done any work for AMEK, and AMEK had no idea of the quality of their work, or lack thereof. AMEK did not send anyone to the house to supervise these workers.
I had to do it myself, which defeats the purpose of hiring a General Contractor to supervise the project. It was clear from the start that the subcontractor could not do the job. AMEK agreed to replace them but hired another subcontractor that was in a hurry. They had to be supervised also, and I was left to do that, again. (no sign of AMEK staff at my house) The subcontractor had to do a bunch of repairs to the exterior before they could install the siding.
The AMEK carpenters had left quite a bit of work undone when they left the jobsite. The subcontractor also left before all the caulking was done. I had to finish up that work myself. It was clear from the start that the old front porch (concrete) needed to be redone, but Paul Schmidt was not interested in any way in helping us make decisions about any of the work to be done.
We expected some help from the contractor in this area but got none. We ended up paying them to redo the porch, at an exorbitant price. They again sent a fly by night concrete contractor to do this work. This contractor was obnoxious and unfriendly and did not understand that he was being paid to do a specific job, and that the quality of the work matters.
He attempted to cut every corner imaginable. I had to watch him the entire time he was at my house. Their work was entirely unprofessional. An employee of AMEK did come over during this phase and ensured that the final product was acceptable. We also had several other issues with the overall quality of work on this project. I was promised that no wood would be left exposed to the elements, necessitating maintenance, by the time the project was over.
Since there was no coordination between AMEK and subcontractors that they hired, we ended up with wood trim left around the garage door, which will require painting and maintenance. Also, they used plastic wood as trim on the new outside front porch (in Minnesota, which gets cold in the winter). This was an inappropriate use of plastic material, and any self-respecting contractor would know not to use this material outdoors in Minnesota.
In the winters we have several cracks out there that are a half-inch wide, allowing moisture and whatever else to get behind the trim. AMEK promised to come back this summer and fix this, but they never showed up. This contractor does not understand the proper use of materials and the proper installation of exterior systems on houses. They talk as if they know what they are doing, but the proof is always in the pudding.
They took our money and promised us spectacular results. They delivered poor quality work and did not even do most the work themselves. They hired unqualified contractors to work on our house, after promising us that the work would be of a very high quality. This is not what we got. I would avoid AMEK at all costs. Do not make the same mistake we did and fall for their sales pitch. It is all smoke and mirrors. Also, they did not finish the job until middle of fall, about six months after they started.

I finally decided to fire Amek after waiting for 6 months on a repair to a mistake they made (I also have not been able to shut my back storm door for 6 months due to the mistake they made.) Don't expect them to return messages or show up on a date or time they give you, let alone do the job the right way. Feeling much better about paying a fair price to the guy who should have been given my back patio project to start with!

Amek remodeled our bathroom in July 2017 and it looks fantastic. Matt, Mark, and Shy were a great team to work with. They were very organized laying out the project and the time when each part of the project would be completed. Communication was outstanding throughout and always had an update. They helped us stay with in our budget and build the bathroom we wanted. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking to find a great design and execution team.
