Charley from Modern Fence came over and gave me a bid for the privacy fence we wanted put up--what he didn't know was I'd priced out the materials already. I was pleased when their bid came in, with labor, at what it would have cost me just for the materials. So we gave them a check for half the cost of the bid, and we were put on the list, assured that they'd be seeing us in two to three weeks. Everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING went wrong with this project. First, getting fencing materials here was delayed for weeks because of the pandemic stopping shipping in various places.
Nearly eight weeks later, they finally got started. The first two guys came out with post hole diggers and poked at the ground rather dubiously, digging all of one hole and part of another three in about four hours straight of digging. The next time they came, they brought a pull-behind trailer auger. Apparently still wouldn't go through the rock hard dirt.
So the next day they brought out the "bigger digger." Which looked like an odd little machine made in 1954, but was working like a champ. Until it wasn't. Took them a full afternoon to get it back up and running. The next day, they hit a gas line. I did NOT know that the gas company only marked from the meter to the road, I thought they marked all the lines within the affected area of construction, like every other utility does.
I was incorrect--and still plan to write the governor about that. Those men could have gotten seriously hurt. And. in the very, very small print in the contract it says, if they hit any utility lines in the progress of the job, it's the home owners responsibility. The gas line repair bill was $600. All things considered, the operations manager said they would pick up half of it.
They finally finished the fence in the rain, jackhammering out the four final post holes that even the bigger digger couldn't accomplish. And it looks spiffy, just what we wanted. But here's why they get five stars: Their final bill was for the remainder of what they bid, other than $300 for the gas line repair. I know within reason their labor costs were far beyond what they originally bid.
But they went ahead and stuck to the bid. I really appreciate people who do what they say they're going to do. Hat's off to the folks at Modern Fence. Things happen, including disasters. But stand-up businesses deserve to be given great reviews when they make the situation right. I would hire them again.

I am a physician in Fort Smith and we needed a rather pricey($4,400), custom fence put into our backyard. I had the fence put in a little over 2 weeks ago and I have waited to post a review until the company (Modern fence) had ample time to make this situation right, but they refused. We had 3 estimates done for a white PVC fence. When the cost for that material more than doubled the price, I asked them to run the numbers again for a white wood fence.
Modern came in the lowest, but they also told me that the arbor I had asked for would cost extra and would be done at a later date. They never stated that a cost would be added for paint or stain. ACE fence stated on the estimate that we could have a 3rd walking gate and the arbor included in the cost but the paint would be an extra $690. The modern fence estimate did not state an added cost for paint.
The fence was put up and I received an invoice. I stated, "You said to pay when it's completed, but the fence has yet to be painted." To which they replied that the paint was never part of the estimate and that would be an extra $970! After several days of back and forth discussion, the manager said he would be willing to paint it at cost ($690). I found it strange that ACE would turn a profit at $690, but modern "discounted it" to $690.
I held onto my check for 2 weeks in the hopes that they would change their mind and paint the fence as was the original agreement, but they refused. They even contacted me several times to ask if I had sent my payment. Please look elsewhere when buying a fence. Modern is all about getting their money and not concerned with client satisfaction. We have lived in Fort Smith for 4.5 years now.
We have dealt with several contractors and sub-contractors. We have been let down more times than I care to share on this review. The only contractor we have dealt with that I would use again is Lee with Lee's flooring who did an amazing job and whose final bill was only half what he estimated!
