Repairs
Report
Heating repairs are performed with safety in mind, and no shortcuts are taken. We'll ensure that your heating equipment runs efficiently and safely with original or approved replacement parts for the best performance and longevity. Faucet drips, running toilets and hard-to-find leaks behind walls are all costing you money, wasting natural resources, and may be damaging your home.
Tankless Water Heaters
Report
There are lots of tankless, or instantaneous, water heaters out there these days. They do a great job and lots of homes in Europe use them. Here in America, though, they present some problems.

I had a couple of issues that needed fixing/investigating. One was that my washing machine didn't have hot water. The guy broke my drain pan moving the machine out and then just said I need a new "box." He did not attempt to disconnect it or clean it (which would have solved the problem. ) I bought a new water leak sensor and asked them to install it. Gateway said that would cost $1500.

I already paid $490 for the initial visit. Even though it would only take an hour or two, they said they charge for 4 hours regardless and that they are $350/hour. I hired a task rabbit to do it for $160 instead.

Gateway has been looking after our brownstone's needs for a dozen years and more. We've always found them to be honest and highly responsive to our old building's sometimes complicated issues. We recommend them highly.

We used Gateway twice this fall, both for boiler maintenance and neither on an emergency basis. The first time, they replaced a $10 part, were on the job for less than an hour and charged $571. The second time, a $300 valve was changed in, again, less than an hour and we were charged $925. When I asked for a rate sheet and a breakdown for parts & labor on the invoice, I was laughed at and when I pointed out to the owner that it appeared that they charged between $5-600/hour for labor, he said this was normal.

In speaking with other plumbers, I have been given rates between $150-200/hour, roughly 1/3 of what Gateway charged and everyone has agreed that detailed invoices are a must.

The highly recommended steam boiler they installed failed after 7 years. We had them service it on a regular basis. Their "very generous offer" was to replace the 10 year warrantied part for $3600. They are happy to take your money up front but apparently it doesn't mean anything when something goes wrong.

Disappointing. Tried to use this company for service and called them twice, and they are conspicuously unresponsive.

You know those companies that tell you to be home during a "window" and then don't even bother showing up? This is one of those companies. They'll cancel on you and take zero responsibility. Do yourself a favor and hire a different company, or go to night school and learn plumbing yourself, because it will be faster than getting a response from them.

I wanted to use Gateway, what a disappointment. Called last week on Monday, someone named Anthony returned my call on the same day, he said they were closed due to the president's day holiday, but that someone would call me on Tuesday. He mentioned that my service would be expensive because of the style boiler that I have, but he could not give me an estimate, but assured me that someone in the office would call me the following day. Tuesday came & went, no call. Wednesday, nothing again. Thursday I called & spoke with a woman who answered the phone. I told her what had happened, she said she would call me back, no apology or anything. Yeah. I will let you guess.yep, never heard from them. How do people do that?

Gateway technician Strato worked on my weils mclain burner. He tuned it up and showed me the condition of the unit. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was Strato professional & talented at his job but he was fantastic to speak with. Very informative. The boiler is working well thanks to him and Gateway. I will continue to use Gateway every year for tune up or any fixes.

I recently purchased a TekMar thermostat from a competitor of John for my eight unit coop. It was a total disaster. I was not sure if the problem would ever get resolved. Luckily I found John and later his coworker Anthony. They came to my rescue and saved me money, time and from total embarrassment. I received so much help and information. Their price was very reasonable for the high quality service provided. Just as important I felt like I was being helped by a friend. I am echoing others but I have to say I wish more plumbing/service companies were like Gateway.

I called Gateway's 24hour receptionist on Saturday morning to get a leak in my kitchen fixed. She took down my info and said the plumber would get back to me as soon as he had availability. I asked how long it would be, and she said "Well, he's working today." So, soon, I thought. Two days later (Monday morning), still no answer. I called again, and a different receptionist asked for my availability.

I gave her today's and tomorrow's-- she replied "Oh, no, we're scheduling a few weeks out." A few weeks out. Meanwhile, my sink is still leaking. Unbelievable. I don't begrude them being busy, but I wish the first receptionist hadn't wasted my time.

Excellent job - assessed the problem, bought the part needed and fixed our Baxi boiler in about 3 hours. Terrific same-day service!

I called John and he was clear, helpful, and intelligent. I recommend that you call. He advised me against a project that would have made him money.

Gateway plumbing is top notch. You could say they are on the higher priced side of the plumber scale, but considering they do the job right the first time and are extremely knowledgeable, I would say the price is fair (I would rather not have to call someone back to fix something or have it last only a short amount of time and then get charged again, which happens often in the plumbing world).

They are also always on call, especially emergencies and since I have a large property, John will sometimes come without prompting and check on things (thats nice in this century :). Besides working with both owners, the other members of the team are friendly, professional and discreet (a big plus when working with high profile clients). I would highly recommend to clients and friends.

When my niece called me in a panic to recommend a good plumbing & heating contractor to do work in her Brownstone in Brooklyn, I said look no further than Gateway Plumbing & Heating. They showed up as scheduled, told her what needed to be done, showed up as scheduled to do the work and really impressed her with their professionalism. They installed my steam boiler a few years back and didn't just install a boiler they performed a work of art.

Drop header steam piping is a lost art. Not so with Gateway. They re-piped the boiler and wow, no more banging pipes. My fuel bills have gone down too. When I showed up at lunch time to see how it was going I was amazed by how neat they work. They tarped the floor in my basement! They skimmed the oils and dirt out of the boiler before leaving and then showed up a week later to re skim it again and just an overall check up, all included in the job.

Look no further when hiring a plumbing & heating contractor. Call Gateway. From top to bottom, you'll get the best, professional job done with no hidden B.S. after the fact.

These guys know steam heat. They came highly recommended from a guy named Dan Holohan who writes books on the subject and after the first consultation, you'll understand why. Ask for John. He's one of the two partners and knows his stuff like no one else I've spoken to before.

Sometimes I am forced to have these guys because I am a tenant and do not get to decide whom to hire. The past three times they did an o.k. job, but 2/3 times tried to overcharge. No surprise charges, please! The last one who came (yes, we have a lot of plumbing troubles), when I called him on some imaginary charge, I could actually see that he was trying to make something up to account for the extra charge. When I called to complain, it became clear: the overcharging is not a bug, it's a feature.

I have never written a Yelp review. I had Dave come out to my Brooklyn home to give me an estimate on installing a new heating and AC system. No small job. He promised to get back to me with an estimate. That was March 11. A week later I sent a follow up email requesting to know when I would hear from him. No reply. Two weeks later I called the office and was told by the woman who answered that I would get the estimate within the week.

No estimate. Two weeks later I called again and was again promised an estimate within the week. No estimate. A week after that I followed up with an email to Dave. No response. It is now April 22, six weeks later, and I just got a voicemail informing me that they were going to pass on the job. It took them SIX WEEKS to tell me they weren't interested. Just giving you the facts.

We just called them to get an estimate for a small job -- installing a new garbage disposal (we've already bought the disposal) and faucet (ditto). Their quote? $600, plus some $19 ridiculousness. Got to be kidding me. Another plumbing company quoted us $175, which still seems a little high but at least in the ballpark. Not sure what universe these guys are living in.

Fast, totally reasonable. And no BS on the pricing either. I haven't used them for major work, just some emergency stuff (I've had a corroded pipe or three), and they're nice guys who make quick work out of it with no nonsense. Not only that, I know it shouldn't be such a huge deal, but they totally clean up and there's no sign of the mess that was there just hours before.

John and his guys have come to the rescue more times than I can count. Somehow, plumbing problems always crop up at the worst times (right before the weekend, right before vacation, during vacation). I have used them for regular service as well as emergency service and these guys are smart, thoughtful and a real pleasure to work with, even during stressful situations. (And they are very forgiving of situational freakouts, to boot!) I can't recommend them enough!

Our toilet was leaking to a point where we didn't know what it was that was leaking. Through friends, and some research online, we found Gateway Plumbing. They responded very quickly and had a foreman (John?) on-site within an hour who took a look, made an assessment of the problem and sent a repairman within a few hours. It was a very positive experience since they responded so fast, were very nice and everything was easy. And they fixed the problem! I'd recommend them!

They have a 24hour hotline, but no 24hour service and non of the agents bothered to explain that while i was waiting throughout the night for a plumber to call me back. But something magical happened when i posted this not-so-positive review over here, the owner of the business called me right away! How awesome is that?! So if u ever need immediate attention just post here. Freedom of speech ftw!

Best plumber in New York. I've had problems with my boiler for years, and I had a few companies come out to look at it. They all said basically the same thing, but John from Gateway explained it all to me, there and in writing, and I could tell he knew what he was doing. I ended up going with Gateway, and it was definitely worth the money. Their people are smart and polite, and everything was done quickly and efficiently.

I feel old. I'm reviewing a plumber. It really sucks that all the hair salons, plumbers and contractors on yelp seem to be shilled to the gills. And it sucked even harder when my bathroom exploded in a fine shower of water last Friday. Truth be told I found Gateway Plumbing through Daily Candy. it may be the first time Daily Candy was helpful for anything.

Within 20 minutes they had someone at my apartment. John showed up, diagnosed all the problems, fixed a couple of immediate things and gave me an estimate. They got their insurance certificates to my building without giving me anxiety and they showed up again the following week to install everything on time and sans agita. The work they did is top notch. John recommended I buy my own supplies to save money and told me exactly what to buy. The estimate was spot on. And hey. the do all the work in the Danny Meyer restaurants. If Danny trusts them, I do too.
