Penn Landscaping & Sunburst Nursery

Came by and plowed a neighbor's driveway. In the process, completely buried our driveway that we had spent hours shoveling out the day previously. There was plenty of space to push the snow somewhere else, so there's no excuse for this. Had my partner call the company to let them know their driver was doing this, and received a pretty nasty response from a woman, who proceeded to hang up on him. There are plenty of places in town that can help with snow removal, I wouldn't go with these folks though.

I have used Penn several times over the past couple years for a few projects (hardscape and landscape). Just as every business has had challenges during this time, I appreciate the work they did during all of this. From talks with family members (family run business) to the office staff, everyone is friendly, professional, and have a true willingness to work with you to meet your specific needs.

Any questions I had during each of my projects were answered quickly, and any specific issues I identified were addressed satisfactorily. I would contact them again for any future projects I may have.

Penn Landscaping completed a job for our front & side yards with landscaping lights and grasses, shrubs and plants. In the spring we had about 3 plants / grasses that did not come back. We have had a lot of problems with the lights and now do not work at all. We had requested paperwork on the lighting but was told they didn't have any but would request it from manufacture.

We have never received the lighting paperwork. We had called and left messages(prior to the year). When we went by the store and spoke with Tyler. He told us it was a little early in the spring and he would come out in a few weeks and see if the plants had returned and would check the lights. 3 weeks went by and no one came out or called. I called and left a few messages, with no response.

I stopped by the store a few weeks later but Tyler was not there. I left a message for him to please call with no response. I have went by the store at least 4 more time in the last few months. No response. Our landscaping lights do NOT work and we have several dead plants / grasses. IT WAS NOT A CHEAP JOB! I would NOT recommend Penn Landscaping or Sunburst Nursery.

I visited this location a few weeks ago to make an engraved gift and learn more about lawn care services. The office gal was nice upon approach but quickly became annoyed as I asked for engraver information. I could see that she had wireless headphones in her ear and I assumed she was to busy for walk in customers during the winter. She got real short and directed me into a showroom with lots of great choices and prices but she said she'd help me in a minute and she never returned.

I was instead greeted by a nice young man who explained it all. Not knowing what I wanted he then directed me to email another person who was really helpful by email/text that evening. On my way out, the office gal was whispering with a taller guy about another employee. I often wonder if places like this know how bad it looks when employees are standing around gossiping about their workplace and new people like me can see it all happening.

I heard so many great things about the business but have to say the greeting I received was not one of them. Because the emailing and ideas went so well I did make an awesome engraved gift and the person I was working with by email even met me after another job. She was positive, kind and made me feel like I was appreciated as a customer. Maybe she should quit her job and answer the phones.

And no. I forgot about the lawn services because no one ever even asked me if I needed help with other services while I was there or told me about what they do. They are celebrating 40 years. It will be a miracle if they are around 40 more.

One thing I will never forget is shopping at penn landscaping for perennials with my family and during this- two men that worked at penn landscaping were attempting to trap a small animal under a bobcat and finally got it trapped- then proceeded to shoot it to death with a rifle while they were open and we were shopping. DO not recommend, I tried posting this to their facebook but of course they quickly removed it, didn't let it be shown.

Not to mention you cant even tell that they sell plants from their marketing its just literally memes and engraving. This place needs some serious help for almost being open for 50 years- which they so proudly announce even though barley anyone in Bloomington/normal knows they exist, if I could id give -5 stars.

Everyone there is great, and Tyler knows so much and takes care of everything up to including in during and after the sale. He has replaced a tree for me even though I know it might cost him on his end without getting reimbursed by the grower. I highly recommend this store

The secretary is absolutely amazing. Polite, helpful, informative, understanding. A wonderful place.

Sunburst Nursery fertilized my lawn this summer for the second year. A neighbor of mine recommended them. My lawn has never looked better! I hired two other companies prior to finding Sunburst and fired them for lack of results. Don't waste your time with other companies. Tyler and his crew are great to work with and very responsive to my questions. I'm looking forward to a beautiful lawn again next year. Thank you Sunburst!

My husband and I found this landscaping company online and drove over. The people who work there were so helpful and kind. We ordered mulch in bulk and had it delivered to our house the next day. The gentlemen who delivered the product were just wonderful and very helpful with advice and general information about our garden. We are new to Bloomington and do so appreciate finding such knowledgeable people to help with our yard. The young man who sold us the mulch and delivered it, knew the scientific and common name and characteristic of every plant in our yard. They have a loyal customer in us.
