Over 40 million decks in the US are more than 20 years old. Time takes its toll on deck and patio structures- especially here in San Diego, decks are subject to a number of damaging elements like dry rot and termites. May is national Deck Inspection month, but you don't have to wait!

Re-doing a second-story deck could never be construed as a fun project--especially a large deck that wraps around half the house--but when circumstances deem it necessary, I heartily recommend Block Island Decks & Patios. The two-week project entailed removing the old and replacing it with the new. Work crews--headed by straight-talking William--performed promptly, professionally, courteously and conscientiously.

It was also a pleasure working with Rick--the top guy (owner)--who was very responsive to every question my wife and I asked--and there were many. (There are so many options to choose from, expert guidance is a real plus--you want to get it "right" the first time.) Rick's follow-up call regarding issues or questions that may arise following completion of the project was also reassuring. One more thing--of the three contractors we quoted, only Block Island gave us a written estimate.

I have an 80ft wooden deck that I wanted to replace with composite materials. After interviewing different contractors, I chose Block Island based on reviews. I was impressed with Rick's professionalism from the first time we met. Rick and his team replaced a huge deck and patio for me this month. His team, William and Matt, were always on time and communicated daily as to next steps.

During the entire process, the area was kept tidy, so as to minimize disruption of my daily life. I would definitely recommend them to anyone considering a project of this size. They worked efficiently, effectively and did a beautiful job.

We had sun damaged wood on our the balcony of our townhouse that needed to be replaced before the HOA selected contractor started repainting the exterior of our unit. We quoted eight contractors, including the one selected by the HOA. The quote from Block Island was not the lowest but it was very competitive and far more comprehensive than the lower cost bidders.

They were able to start the work in a short period and completed it in about half the time done by others on equivalent units. Throughout the project Jim and his team were in constant communication on their progress and very quickly resolved the few minor issues we noted. Based on my experience with the design and build of industrial facilities I also found their workmanship to be excellent. Thanks to Jim and his onsite team of Matt, Travis and Leon.

We were very impressed after meeting with Rick form Block Island Remodeling Decks and Patios. After getting estimates from several other companies to rebuild our deck, we immediately knew that Rick and his company were the ones to go with. He was easy to get a rapport with and worked hard to get the exact computer rendering of what I wanted. I also had two colors of paint that I wanted used and he was fine with what I wanted.

The crew was polite, professional, always cleaned up, and answered any questions that I had. They were on time and the deck turned out beautifully. I would highly recommend them.

Block Island Remodeling took down a previous deck and built a new one. Everything was done in a timely manner and the craftsmanship was excellent. I wasn't home when the workers did the work, but Rick was excellent. I would call them again. Everything was great. You'll have a pleasant experience with Block Island Remodeling.

It is my sincere pleasure to recommend Block Island Remodeling, Inc. for any construction or remodeling projects. They are experienced professionals who go out of their way to help their clients with time sensitive schedules, and budgets. Our recent experience with Jim at Block Island was with a time sensitive repair job, which turned out to be a positive experience at every level.

We want to give a special thanks to Jim's team who did a fantastic job, and kept us on time even with an extremely tight schedule. Thank you Jim, we appreciate Block Islands personalized service! Deb, Envision Real Estate

I am a little behind in getting this review in, but better late than never. I used Block Island Deck and Patios to build a brand new deck for us back in June. We purchased a house with a giant 16 foot swim spa with a raised deck around it. After about 2 years it began to develop leaks and other issues that were going to require a lot of money to fix.

Since the spa was about 20 years old we decided to have it removed as well as the deck. We were left with a 20 foot by 20 foot area of concrete that looked terrible as well as having multiple levels due to a concrete pad of different thickness being poured so the spa could sit on it and be level. In addition, the concrete sloped up to meet the now raised sidewalk that was about a foot thick on one end sloping down to ground level on the other end.

Block Island Deck and Patios was one of the companies that came to give me an estimate. Price wise all three companies were in the same range, but I ended up picking Block Island Deck and Patios because Rick, who came out to do my estimate, seemed a little more knowledgeable about decks and gave me a lot of information that included what was best because we live on a canyon.

I learned quite a bit about fire ratings which the other companies did not mention. So, we had them build a 20 foot by 20 foot two step (on two sides) deck. Even though they had to build the frame of different levels and in some areas sloping concrete, the deck ended up perfectly level. We chose Trex decking as the material, as we wanted to have a maintenance free deck. William and his crew showed up each day on time, worked throughout the day, and at the end of the day completely cleaned up the area.

The only thing I had a concern with was that instead of using the Trex fascia board around the deck they used regular wood and stained it to be the color of the deck. When I contacted Rick about this he said that in their experience they have encountered fascia board made of the deck material didn't hold up well as it is always getting kicked and taking other abuse.

I would have like to have been a part of that decision so I could make the choice. Now every few years I will have to stain that fascia board to keep the wood in good shape and same color as deck. I would have liked to knock off of a star for that, but since I can't I'll leave it at 5 stars. Other than that I am totally satisfied with my experience with the deck they did for the house, and definitely satisfied with the quality of work the team did. I would use them again if I ever have this type of project to do.

Wow! Met with Jim to discuss repairing the termite damage on our home and garage, after Block Island was recommended to me. So thankful they were! So glad we hired them and not someone else. We had Dave and his crew Leon and Kyle out today and they are an excellent team that are not only thorough, but clearly take pride in their work. Would not only hire Block Island again, but will recommend them to everyone. Thank you.

I couldn't be more pleased with my new deck. Rick and his crew were professional, efficient, neat, considerate, and personable. We had a few other bids but nothing as comprehensive and detailed as the bid we got from Block Island, including a computer-generated rendering of what we could expect our deck to look like. Rick was very patient with any inquiry I made and with changes to our original request.

The final product is exactly what we wanted and rock solid, "you could park a car on it"! The cost was incredibly reasonable and we'll enjoy taking advantage of our view and new deck for many years to come. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BLOCK ISLAND and will refer them to any friends & family. See before & after pics.

We recently had major repairs done to the entryway to our home due to wood rot and termite damage. Jim Stevenson, one of the owners, was kind enough to come out to our home twice to discuss the scope of work to be done. Very personable guy; zero sales push. You don't pay anything until you're 100% satisfied with the work done. Jon Huntsman was the primary carpenter on the job.

His carpentry skills and work ethic were extraordinary. He consistently went the extra mile to ensure that everything was perfect. By the time Block Island was finished, our front entryway was better constructed than when originally built. We would definitely use Block Island again.

Block Island Remodeling built a 2nd story deck for us and it was a wonderful experience. Their prices were very competitive, their professionalism was top notch, and their staff were polite and competent. The job was done in 4 days. They arrived as scheduled and kept us in the loop on what was being done and when and why all the way through.

My neighbor used this company for some termite damage repair & referred them to me. Jim & his crew were great - start to finish. These guys are busy for a good reason, they take good care of business and their customers. Working with a company "says what they will do" and then "does what they say", plus some extras was a great experience. I'd highly recommend these guys. I'm a contractor & I'm very finicky about who I use and would recommend.

I would definitely recommend Block Island Decking. We recently purchased a house that had a 400 square foot second-story deck suffering from termites and dry rot. It had to be replaced and we decided to use a synthetic material. We interviewed/received estimates from six different contractors. Rick stood out from the crowd.

Rick was very responsive even with a small repair that I needed. He scheduled an experienced carpenter who was very efficient, completed the repair of my rotted deck stairway, and improved it from the original construction. The workmanship was excellent and it looks great. I recommend these guys highly.

This was the most wonderful Holiday Season. Rick and his excellent Team made our dream come true and created an exceptional deck with the flair of a Tuscan terrace. For Thanksgiving the deck was completed and we could enjoy the great view from upstairs. For Christmas an additional French door was installed downstairs and the work was perfectly done.

What a great company! They are HONEST and dedicated to doing their work "by the book!" They will not do shady work. Jim is the by far the best to work with, even when he's swamped with work. If you want your deck and patio repaired or even built from top to bottom, definitely recommend these guys. 5 Star all the way. If you want cheap work.go elsewhere. They are the best in town.

Block Island Remodeling just finished completing major repairs for significant termite & wood rot damage inside & outside of my house. The job done was outstanding! Jim Stevenson, the owner, was wonderful to work with. Jim's such a personable guy. The customer is his #1 priority. I didn't pay him a cent until the job was completed & I was very happy with the job. Jim wanted everything to be completed just right.

The lead carpenter, Jon Huntsman, was a real professional. Jon was thorough & Jon was a perfectionist in the level of his detail to match up the old & the new painted & stained areas. Every day when Jon finished the cleanup was meticulous. Jon always left inside & outside of my house spotless! I would (and already have) recommend Block Island in an instant. They are the consummate professionals and provide outstanding customer service.

This is a company I would and Have recommended over and over. As a Realtor I come across some real challenges with Foreclosed properties in particular. Rick and his crew are extremely prompt when I call for an estimate and just as quick to get the job started and finished.

Block Island just finished completing major repairs to our house for extensive termite damage. The job they did was outstanding. Jim came out several weeks ago and gave us an estimate that was not only thorough but very reasonable for the amount of repair our house needed. The repair crew showed up yesterday, on time with all of the materials needed.

A day and a half later, our house looks as good as new. All of the repairs were completed professionally and every replaced or patched area painted to match perfectly. Unless you know where they worked I would defy anyone to find the repaired areas. Finally, when they finished, their cleanup left the yard and house spotless! I would (and already have) recommend Block Island in an instant. They are professional, prompt, competitive in their pricing and provide outstanding customer service.

Block Island removed an existing large, wraparound, cantilevered 25-year old Douglas Fir deck from the second story of our home, including the substructure, deck boards, and railing, and replaced it with a new deck that has a pressure-treated substructure, composite (Fiberon Horizon) deck boards, and composite railing with glass inserts. This job took 1-2 weeks, with either one or two men on the property for the entire day.

Block Island was one of four companies we engaged to bid on the project, and not only was the price competitive, but the owner, Rick, was by far the most professional and responsive of all of the companies we contacted. He inspired our confidence to spend what is for us, a large sum of saved money (we are fixing up our home as we have the cash, rather than financing), and was very patient with our questions as we changed our minds several times about what we wanted.

Although the project started a couple weeks later than originally scheduled (due to our large beam being backordered), Rick stayed in communication and finished the project within the expected parameters. He obviously cares about the quality of the finished product; for example, for this large beam that needed to be special-ordered, he paid an upcharge for a higher-quality piece of wood to ensure that we would be happy when it finally arrived, since he couldn't hand-pick the piece.

He visited the job site approximately every other day to check the progress and make recommendations to the workers. All of the workers were professional and on-task, and amazingly cleaned up so that you didn't even know they were there that day. We recommend Rick and his company without hesitation, and would happily use them again and refer them to our friends and neighbors.

Rick the owner, answered the phone the first time I called. We needed 2 decks, one large, one small, re-done w/ a waterproofing finish. He came out, gave a bid and told us, we pay nothing until the job is done and we are satisfied. I interviewed 3 others and all were within the same range of pricing. Rick's guys showed up on time, were thorough and went above and beyond.

His drywall contractor, asked if he could clean up some other areas in my garage that needed "help". did a great job. I'm in the Real Estate business and it's hard to find honest contractors who under promise and over deliver. LOVED this company. Highly recommend.

This company deserves a 5 star rating. I was driving behind one of their work trucks in Escondido and saw their ad on the back of the truck for roof repair, dry rot repair, etc. I called in and spoke to the owner and he came out to my house to give me an estimate. He was honest and sincere. I needed to have a repair performed on the corner of my patio roof due to dry rot. I've had 2 other bids from other companies that both wanted to "replace" what I had.

One bid was $1600, the other was $2000. My roof did not need to be replaced. It needed to be repaired. I hired Block Island Remodeling and when the roofer came out he replaced only the section that was contaminated with dry rot. He pulled back the torch down mat to make sure the dry rot hadn't spread any further and even had me come up on a ladder to take a look for myself.

I really wanted to personally thank the roofer who did the work and give him a tip, but he left quietly and I never got a chance to thank him. His personality was awesome. He's got a great attitude, and he's friendly, and if I was in the roofing business myself, I'd want him to work for me. I own my own business and I know how important reviews are to customers, that's why I'm leaving this. I hope my review helps someone. I would be happy to refer this company. David - Escondido, Ca

Nice crew, pleasant, tidy and professional. We selected based on their BBB rating and bid. The low rating is for customer follow up. They clearly over-commit. Specifically they came out for a one day job. Once the crew discovered additional work (and materials) were required, the speed in which they bolted to go to another, much larger job was impressive.

Now we have been chasing them for the simple rework bid and to schedule completion for two weeks. Its comforting the (pleasant) construction crew have the financial stability of larger jobs in this current economic climate. However, as the customer, we should not have to contact their staff every few days and request follow up. Follow up: Finally got a response, they claimed technology based problems. Seriously? Professional, knowledgeable crew came out and finished the job. Unfortunately, after they left, we discovered they did not complete (albeit a small) portion of the requested work. Whatever.

Rather than continue to deal with their scheduling "challenges", we will just DIY. Bottom line: the work crew does a solid job, pleasant, professional and excellent clean up. Unfortunately the project manager's lack of consistent follow up, and "scheduling" stall tactics pissed away any solid marks they earned for the above work. We (and you) would probably be better off selecting another company who want the work and can commit to completing the job promptly.
